Bronze Censer
Bronze with traces of black lacquer. Of an archaic dou form with a fitted top with a large circular aperture terminating in a cylindrical neck with a wide, flat rim. The varying registers decorated in an intricate 'cash' design and pointed acanthus leaves. Yuan dynasty bronzes frequently reference archaic forms that convey the nation's prowess and longevity. The bold, powerful nature of Yuan culture found an easy compatibility with the strong, dominant archaistic forms. The "cash" or "coin" symbol used to decorate the form is derived from Chinese currency; coins were in use around 600 BCE but it was not until the Han dynasty (206 BCE-220 CE) that the familiar round coin with the square hole was introduced. The round coin was meant to symbolize heaven as well as to represent the flexible nature of good governance (no rough edges) while the square aperture represents the earth as well as the absolute straight line of justice. The inclusion of the symbol as a decorative pattern was first appears in the third century and conveys a wish for material, physical and spiritual health.
